Famous Knitter Workshop Series: Susanna Hansson

alt

Susanna HanssonSusanna grew up in Sweden and learned to knit in the fifth grade, as did all young Swedish girls in the early 1960's. She has been an instrumental influence in the renaissance of interest in the unique patterned colorwork Bohus Stickning sweaters and her collection of vintage garments was the centerpiece of a highly successful exhibit at the American Swedish Institute (ASI) in 2009. Susanna takes her workshops on the road to guilds, retreats, and shops in North America, Scandinavia, Japan, and the UK. Her work is grounded in her love of technique, detail, history, and culture. She loves to teach as much as she loves to knit!  For more information about Susanna, please visit her website at www.oneofsusannas.com.

Bohus StickningThe story of Bohus is a story of couture knitting, sociology, women's history, social justice, and cultural legacy all in one. Learn more about the Bohus movement, its background and history. Discuss differences between this and other multi-color techniques and discover what it is that makes the Bohus patterns 'sing'. Participants will be able to examine in detail several vintage pieces from Susanna's collection. The class project is a pair of wristlets worked in a 50% merino/50% angora yarn from Sweden.  Note: You are expected to know how to knit in the round.

Supplies:  The gauge in genuine Bohus garments is approximately 8.5 - 9 stitches/inch.  Because you will not have made a gauge swatch ahead of time with the yarn we will be using, bring a selection of needle sizes. Consider bringing several sets from among the following:1.75 mm/US 00, 2.0 mm/US 0, 2.25 mm/US 1, 2.5 mm/US 1.5, 2.75 mm/US 2, 3.0 mm/US 2.5, and 3.25 mm/US 3.

Note: you are expected to know how to knit in the round prior to the workshop. Bring whatever type of needle you prefer for knitting in the round (double points, 2 pairs of circulars or 1 long circular needle for the magic loop technique. Susan Bates makes a great inexpensive set of color coded DP needles in small sizes, called a SOCK SET). Optional: Any Bohus-style garments you have collected or made; a magnetic pattern holder with a magnifying line marker; a battery powered light source.
